Vision screeners conduct annual screenings on all students in grades K, 1, 3, 6 andany students new to Florida in grades K-5 or upon referral. The SPOT Vision Screener is the instrument used. A symbol chart is available in most school clinics when needed. Third grade boys are tested for color discrimination using the Ishihara's Colour Book.
Criteria for Passing Vision Screening:

Grades Pre-K-K: 20/40 both eyes far

Grade 1-12: 20/30 both eyes far and near

Grade 3: In addition to above, color perception (boys)

Referrals
Students with suspected vision problems, or those with eyeglasses in need of repair or replacement, should be referred to the vision assistant for screening and a follow-up. Vision screening is done for three-year re-evaluations of ESE students.
If a parent/guardian is in need of financial assistance in order to obtain an eye exam and/or eyeglasses for the student, a referral should be made to the vision assistant and/or school board nurse.
If visual acuity is 20/70 or worse in both eyes, the student is referred to the guidance counselor who will make a referral to the visually impaired program. For ESE referrals, vision screenings can be performed by the school employee designated by the principal. Vision charts will be provided by health services toeach school. If a student fails the screening, referral should be made to vision assistant.
